You might be asking yourself “What Is A Safety Switch?”

Unlike circuit breakers which are mainly meant to protect your appliances from getting too much current flow, safety switches keep you safe from electric shocks.

You are legally required to have a safety switch installed within your home. Safety switches are also known as Residual Current Devices (RCDs) that prevent fires and electrocution.

They act as another level of protection on your switchboards.

Switchboard Upgrades and Repairs: Ensuring Your Electrical System is Safe and Efficient

Your switchboard is the heart of your home’s electrical system, managing the flow of electricity throughout your house. But just like any other system, it needs maintenance and repair from time to time. In this article, we’ll discuss why it’s important to get your switchboard repaired and upgraded, as well as when you might need to do so.

The Importance of Switchboard Repairs

Your switchboard contains a variety of components, including circuit breakers, fuses, and safety switches, all of which work together to protect your home and family from electrical hazards.

If any of these components fail, it can lead to serious safety issues, such as electric shocks, electrocution, and fires.

That’s why it’s essential to get your switchboard repaired as soon as you notice any problems.

Common signs that your switchboard may need repairs include flickering lights, tripping circuit breakers, buzzing sounds, and burning smells.

If you notice any of these signs, it’s important to call a licensed electrician right away to inspect your switchboard and make any necessary repairs.

The Importance of Switchboard Upgrades

While repairs can fix specific issues with your switchboard, an upgrade may be necessary if your current switchboard is outdated or no longer able to handle your home’s electrical needs.

An outdated switchboard can cause a range of issues, from tripping circuit breakers to electrical fires, and can even pose a danger to your family.

Upgrading your switchboard can help ensure that your home’s electrical system is safe, efficient, and able to meet your family’s needs.

A new switchboard can include modern safety features, such as safety switches and surge protection, that weren’t available in older models.

Additionally, a new switchboard can increase your home’s electrical capacity, allowing you to add new appliances and electrical systems without overloading your system.

When You Might Need a Switchboard Repair or Upgrade

There are several situations when you may need a switchboard repair or upgrade. Some common scenarios include:

  • You’re experiencing frequent power outages or tripping circuit breakers
  • You’re adding new appliances or electrical systems to your home
  • You have an old switchboard that hasn’t been updated in many years
  • You’re concerned about the safety of your switchboard or the overall electrical system in your home

If you’re experiencing any of these issues, it’s important to call a licensed electrician to inspect your switchboard and recommend the best course of action. In some cases, a repair may be all that’s needed to fix a specific issue. In other cases, an upgrade may be necessary to ensure that your home’s electrical system is safe and efficient.

In conclusion, your switchboard plays a critical role in your home’s electrical system, and it’s essential to ensure that it’s functioning properly at all times. If you’re experiencing any issues with your switchboard, don’t hesitate to call a licensed electrician to inspect and make any necessary repairs or upgrades. By taking proactive steps to maintain your switchboard, you can help ensure the safety and efficiency of your home’s electrical system for years to come.

Common questions asked about switchboard upgrades & switchboard repairs in Adelaide

Some of the main reasons why you need a switchboard upgrade include:

  1. If you have an older switchboard,
  2. There is a high likelihood that it will get overloaded (it wasn’t designed to cope with all the new-age appliances!)
  3. Lower fire risk,
  4. Newer switchboards have inbuilt safety switches.

It takes approximately four hours to upgrade and change over your current home’s switchboard to a safer and more modern option.

However, this length of time is dependent upon the fuse box and switchboard themselves, as they tend to vary from property to property.

The primary components of a switchboard structure are the frame, bus, overcurrent protective devices, instrumentation, enclosures and exterior covers.

The switchboard frame is the metal skeleton that houses all the other components. The bus, which is either copper or aluminum, is mounted within this frame.

Your switchboard upgrade will involve the replacement of all ceramic fuses for modern, safe circuit breakers and RCDs.

This occurs in a neat enclosure along with the rewiring/tidying of the cables behind your panel; before finishing with the testing of the entire installation and residence

1. Updated electrical safety requirements

Over the years the electrical safety requirements, wiring standards, and work practices have changed in Australia. What was once standard practice is seen as being unsafe and negligent now.

2. The switchboard is the central point of your electrical systems

The switchboard is the control centre for the electrical system throughout your home, operating everything from the toaster to the complete ducted air conditioning system. If the switchboard is faulty or not coping this can affect the rest of your home’s electrical components.

3. Our homes need more power now

The current demands of your electrical system are significantly more than they would have been even 20 or 30 years ago. A standard home has more appliances, which means the system needs to supply more power. Older fuse boxes can struggle to cope with this increase in demand, which can cause problems like overheating and the danger of fires or electrical accidents.

4. No safety switches

What’s protecting family and friends from electrical accidents if you don’t have a safety switch? In Queensland and many other parts of the country, it’s mandatory to have a safety switch fitted to the power point circuit of every home to protect residents from electrical accidents. If your home is not fitted with one, or more, you are exposing your family, friends or anyone working in your home to potentially deadly electrical accidents.

5. Ceramic fuses are not very safe

Old-style ceramic fuses don’t offer the level of safety protection modern circuit breakers do. Who even knows how to change a fuse nowadays? It may seem simple, however, using the wrong size fuse wire can pose a serious overheating and fire risk.

6. Asbestos is often used for fuse board backing panels

Asbestos was commonly used as a building material from 1920 to the 1980s throughout Australia, its use was not completely halted until the end of 2003. Asbestos-containing backing panels were often used for switchboards during this period. These panels present a health risk if they are damaged or any work has to be done on the board which can expose residents to dangerous asbestos fibres.

Marcus and Ethan were excellent! I had a chandelier that I needed installed in a stairwell in a two story house and it was not a problem for the guys. The lights were hanging too low and it was no problems for the boys to readjust the height of all the lights. This was no small adjustment but the guys did this happily. Top service, very easy to work with, responsive and very friendly. Highly recommend!
